La Charla (The Chat) Radio Program
In October 2001, we began broadcasting a Spanish language interview-style radio show that is broadcast five nights a week on Siler City's WNCA 1570 AM. Radio is an effective way of reaching people with varying degrees of literacy and popular with many local Latinos. La Charla is an educational forum in which our radio host, Claudia Moná, a native of Colombia, interviews guests on topics of interest to the community such as parenting education, domestic violence, substance abuse prevention, general health, immigration, and financial literacy, among others. La Charla also serves as a medium to quickly disseminate information to our local community, such as during the last ice storm, when we warned residents of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
One listener, Oscar Rios Gaudiano, comments that La Charla is important because by listening people are "informed about the assistance that is available in our community from non-profits, such as the Hispanic Liaison and other agencies, and about other topics like substance abuse, immigration, Consulate, child care, and more. The program reaches western Chatham, northern Lee, eastern Randolph, and southern Guilford Counties.
Grito Juvenil (Teen Shout) Youth Radio
Entirely produced by Latino youth from the local high school, Jordan Mathews, the program Grito Juvenil (Teen Shout) is unique in that it is the only Latino youth produced radio show in North Carolina. In general, Latino teens in Siler City are children of first generation immigrants who earn low wages in local industry. Because we are in a rural area, there are few opportunities for teens to be a part of after-school activities. With Grito, Siler City youth gather every Tuesday at EVH to identify their topics, research, and develop their program, before going to the local AM WNCA studio to air their show live for a half-hour. With Grito, EVH and Siler City teens have created a safe space for youth to dialogue around topics impacting Latino youth in Siler City. The local teens also focus on their futures by raising youth awareness of career opportunities. The teens invite special guests whom they interview on Grito. Some of their guests include a representative of the College Foundation of NC, which provides college scholarships and the Director of NC Society of Hispanic Professionals. Since its inception in May 2003, the teens have produced and aired over 40 live shows.
